Depression Help Is Available

Depression is NOT a life sentence - help is available. The best thing you can do for yourself is to realize that depression can be treated, and then get the depression help you need.

The first step is to talk with your doctor and have a physical examination. This will allow the doctor to find if there is a physical cause for your depression, and eliminate certain medical conditions (such as some viral infections) that can mimic symptoms of depression.

The results of the medical tests will determine the course of action and the type of depression help you may receive.

If the depression is determined to be minor or less severe, psychotherapy alone may be prescribed. For more moderate or severe forms of depression, a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressant medication may be suggested. The antidepressant medication often provides quick relief, while the psychotherapy helps to deal with life's problems and provides long-term solutions to those problems and dealing with depression.

For cases of severe or life-threatening depression, electroconvulsive therapy is often useful. It can also help in cases where the depressed individual cannot take an antidepressant medication, or when the medication has not successfully provided relief from depression. Often known as "shock therapy" and stigmatized in the past, electroconvulsive therapy has been greatly improved, is quite safe and can be very effective in dealing with depression.

New Depression Help

A new type of depression help is called EFT, short for Emotional Freedom Techniques.

EFT is an "energy therapy", which involves simple tapping on certain points of the body in order to release any blocks in the body and allow healthy energy to move freely through the body. It is proving to be highly effective in treating a wide variety of physical and emotional conditions, including depression.
